John Holter’s Three Musings transforms personal memories into three vivid musical reflections. Awakening blurs dreaming and reality, inspired by a distant train horn entering the composer’s sleep. Lament, prompted by the loss of a former home to fire, explores grief while leaving open the possibility of hope. Frolic and Frenzy turns a professor’s distinctive gait into an off-kilter rhythmic world filled with humor, personality, and unexpected sounds.

Johannes Brahms’s String Quartet No. 1 in C minor, Op. 51, No. 1 enters an inner world without offering us a story. Restless, tender, urgent, and intensely personal, the music invites each listener to find their own meaning within it.

Together, these works explore two ways music can express an inner life: one beginning with stories and memories, the other leaving the story entirely to us.
